Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about SL.O and the translator.
What is SL.O?
SL.O (Secret Language Online) is an original constructed language. It has its own alphabet of 30 letters, its own grammar and a growing dictionary. It is not English written with different symbols.
Is the SL.O translator free?
Yes. The translator is free to use and does not need an account. Translation runs in your browser, so the text you type is not uploaded to our servers.
Can I translate SL.O back to English?
Yes. Paste SL.O in Roman letters or in the SL.O symbol script and the translator converts it back to English. Text produced by the translator comes back exactly as you wrote it.
Does it translate every English sentence?
Every sentence can be written and read back exactly. Sentences that use grammar SL.O cannot express yet are written word-for-word in a literal mode and are clearly marked. Words that are not in the dictionary are spelled as reversible loanwords until a real SL.O word is added.
Is SL.O a real language?
SL.O is a constructed language (conlang), like Esperanto or Toki Pona, but much newer. It has fixed pronunciation, a writing system, word-formation rules and grammar. It is not natively spoken by a community yet.
How do I type the SL.O symbols?
You can type in Roman letters (for example "mi naru pit") and the translator shows the symbol script next to it. Copy either version. Your device needs a font that supports the symbols; modern phones and computers do.
Can I use SL.O for secret messages?
You can use SL.O for fun, games, stories and notes. It is a creative language, not encryption, so please do not use it to protect sensitive information.
