Cipher vs Constructed Language: What Is the Difference?

People often use “secret language”, “code” and “gibberish” to mean the same thing. They are different.

Ciphers and codes

A cipher changes the letters of an existing language. Games such as Pig Latin only reshape English words.

Constructed languages

A constructed language has its own vocabulary and grammar. Examples include Esperanto.

Where SL.O fits

SL.O is a constructed secret language: it has its own alphabet, its own words (mi, tu, naru, pit) and its own SL.O grammar. Try it in the free SL.O translator.
